buy those energy-saving light bulbs on sale at WalMart or Costco. You can check out the energy cost savings at Energy Star at http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_cfls. The site claims: "If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars." That's way cool!

In winter plastic up your windows...even if they seal well it is still an additional barrier. Install dimmers and USE them. Turn lights off. Dont heat your house so you can wear a tshirt, make it nice when you wear a sweat shirt. Blanket your water heater. lower your heater even more when you sleep and put an extra blanket and flannel sheets. pen blinds when the light is shining in those windows and close them after it isnt. Turn power strips off for items you are not using...TV, Radio, PC, or what ever. In your fuse box, turn off your house AC unit and even your oven when not in use. To save even more on heating your house. Leave your house at 55-60 and use a space heater on a TIMER in the room you are currently in and the first 15 minutes you are in bed room. Why are there lights outside your house? I know why so you can SEE when you are outside...not so others can gawk at your house at 3am. Seal around windows with caulk outside. Make sure your doors seal well, if not ad a better seal at the bottom or sides. Use expanding foam in your basement or other areas that let air move in and out of your house. TAPE your duct work up. If you have a cold room, install a booster fan in that duct line and then wrap the entire line in insulation. I am tired of typing now. Good luck.

Make sure to replace all weatherstripping on your door so the winter cold is left outside!

Utilize a budgeting/money management program, this will help you realize where you spend your money and will assist you in creating a budget. Once you see how your money is being spent, you can wisely cut back on waste. We utilize MoneyDance, which is an Open-Source, though not free, alternative to Quicken or MS Money. We've tried all three and like MoneyDance the best, plus it works on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.

Look over your cell phone bill and see if there is anything you can cut out. Many people pay for minutes they never use or other options they could do without.

Chad - 10/22/2008
Personally I have done a bunch of things to cut my monthly bills. I have also called the cable company and threatened to cancel and ended up saving $40/month. I also found out I was paying too much for my term life insurance policy so I cut back on the coverage from 1 million to $500,000 and was able to save $120/month. I canceled my American Express Platinum card and saved $400/year. I saved around $800 per year by reducing the coverage on my boat from the full replacement cost to the amount owed on the loan (which is still more than the boat is worth). I also got rid of all those monthly subscription charges that were hitting my credit card like NetFlix, Travel Insurance and Weight Watchers. Oh and I almost forgot, I just looked at my cell phone charges recently and realized I was not even coming close to my monthly cap on minutes or text messages so I changed my plan and was able to save $20/month.
