I'm From Your Health Insurance Company and I'm Here to Help You

Posted By Sarah

BillSavings.com Brief:

You may be quite surprised at the help that could be available to you from your health insurance company. If you have a serious illness with lots of doctors involved, you could get a case manager to assist you with the red tape and more.

The case managers are a different breed of worker in our health-care system, which I feel bodes well for our future. I've long felt nurses are the backbone of our medical system (no offense, doctors). This sounds like a really great improvement in health to make sure that you and your case don't fall through the cracks.

A recent article on much needed health care case manager system in the Wall Street Journal describes it well:

"Different from disease-management programs, which focus on patients with a chronic condition such as asthma or diabetes, the case-management services are for patients with costly and complex medical conditions such as cancer or an organ transplant. These managers -- typically nurses -- help patients with everything from avoiding duplicated tests to finding the best-priced prescriptions and other services."

I know my parents have experienced challenges with the tangled mess of medical bills, multiple doctors, multiple insurance plans and I can see how much this type of case manager could save them time, frustration and money. Although, there is some controversy about how "helpful" some case managers truly are--if they are part of the health insurance companies' way to cut costs rather than truly a patient advocate.

This field is growing faster than other nursing fields, with geriatric case management included, and you can get a certificate in nursing case management from various universites and programs.

It's important to know your health insurance coverage and what it will pay for before you encounter a serious health challenge. You may discover you thought you had a Cadillac and you really only have a Volkswagen, to use a car analogy!
